CERT Issues Urgent Cybersecurity Advisory Amid Rising Cyberattack Threats in Pakistan

In the wake of escalating regional tensions, Pakistan’s National Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) has released a critical cybersecurity advisory to address the growing threat of cyberattacks across the country. This alert comes as digital vulnerabilities continue to be exploited by hostile actors, prompting urgent calls for enhanced protective measures among key national institutions.

The advisory specifically highlights the heightened risk faced by sensitive sectors such as government agencies, defense establishments, and financial organizations. These entities are considered prime targets for a range of sophisticated cyber threats, including deepfake disinformation campaigns, spear-phishing attacks designed to deceive high-profile individuals, and distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) assaults aimed at disrupting online services. The CERT’s warning underscores the potential compromise of official social media accounts, which could be manipulated to spread misinformation or cause reputational damage.

Moreover, the financial sector is cautioned about the increasing danger of ransomware attacks, which can lock down critical banking infrastructure and demand hefty payments for data recovery. In response, the advisory urges government employees and the general public alike to remain vigilant when encountering suspicious links or unfamiliar mobile applications. It stresses the importance of adopting multi-factor authentication protocols and ensuring that all systems receive timely security updates to close exploitable gaps.

To further safeguard digital environments, the CERT has mandated that users, particularly those in the public sector, avoid downloading applications from unverified sources. This precaution is vital to prevent malware infiltration and unauthorized data access. The advisory also draws attention to the psychological dimension of cyber warfare, warning about the use of deepfakes and fabricated news stories as tools for psychological operations aimed at destabilizing public trust and spreading confusion.

In addition to preventive measures, IT departments across various organizations have been instructed to initiate immediate threat hunting exercises and conduct thorough security audits. These proactive steps are intended to identify and neutralize potential vulnerabilities before they can be exploited by malicious actors. The urgency of the situation is further underscored by recent incidents where two private television channels and a mobile application experienced security breaches. Thanks to swift technical interventions, these platforms were restored and are currently operating normally.

Meanwhile, sources within Pakistan’s strategic circles revealed that a counteroffensive was launched in response to these cyber incursions. This retaliatory action reportedly targeted certain Indian television channels and several Israeli websites, resulting in their temporary disruption. Such developments highlight the increasingly complex and tit-for-tat nature of cyber conflicts in the region, emphasizing the need for robust cybersecurity frameworks and international cooperation to mitigate risks.
