United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres arrived in Islamabad on Tuesday for an official three-day visit to Pakistan. His stay, scheduled from October 6 to 8, follows an invitation extended by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar.
Upon arrival, Guterres was welcomed by Acting Foreign Secretary Ambassador Nabeel Munir. During his visit, the UN chief is set to hold meetings with prominent Pakistani leaders, including President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Ishaq Dar, and Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Asim Munir.
In a significant development, Guterres will also tour the headquarters of the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP). Additionally, he will receive a briefing at the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), highlighting Pakistan’s advancements in disaster preparedness and early-warning systems.
This visit offers a platform for Pakistan and the UN leadership to exchange views on both regional and international issues. It also serves to reaffirm Islamabad’s enduring cooperation with the United Nations. Notably, Pakistan is expected to emphasize its dedication to strengthening multilateralism and promoting global peace and security during these engagements.
The Foreign Office emphasized that the visit underscores Pakistan’s steadfast support for multilateralism centered around the United Nations and its commitment to upholding the principles and purposes outlined in the UN Charter.
