In a significant development near RAF Fairford in western England, British police arrested five men on Sunday on suspicion of explosives and terrorism-related offenses. The arrests followed a tip-off about three vans reportedly traveling toward the US military airfield, which has been utilized for operations targeting Iran.
Counter-terrorism detectives leading the inquiry revealed that authorities received an alert in the early hours regarding the suspicious vehicles. Armed officers detained the five individuals, who are now held on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act. Officials confirmed that the situation is currently under control.
Counter Terrorism Policing Senior National Coordinator Vicki Evans stated that the investigation is in its initial phase and that close collaboration with partners is ongoing to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Security measures included establishing a 400-meter cordon around the base while bomb disposal teams examined the vans. Local residents were evacuated as armed officers maintained patrols throughout the area.
The British government, which has authorized the US to deploy bombers from Fairford to strike Iranian missile sites threatening vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, noted that Prime Minister Andy Burnham was being kept informed about the unfolding events.
In July, the UK armed forces declared readiness to defend the country following warnings from Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, who cautioned that any base used for launching attacks, including Fairford, would be considered a legitimate target.
Authorities have not disclosed the identities or affiliations of those involved in the incident, which disrupted nearby village residents, waking them early and necessitating the evacuation of 85 homes.
Access to the base was heavily restricted by armed police and large machinery, while heightened security was also reported at other US-operated bases in England, such as RAF Lakenheath, where armored vehicles and soldiers were stationed at entry points.
Gloucestershire Police Assistant Chief Constable Richard Ocone described the situation as a major incident, emphasizing that emergency services have well-practiced protocols for such events. He noted that the cordon remains as a precaution and that a visible emergency presence will continue in the area for an extended period.
A photograph circulated online showed five shirtless men purportedly connected to the arrests. Meanwhile, a US Air Force spokesperson refrained from commenting on specific security measures but affirmed that the 501st Combat Support Wing and other UK-based units remain vigilant to protect US personnel, civilians, contractors, and their families.
The spokesperson added that security protocols are continuously evaluated and adjusted to safeguard installations and personnel.
British officials have previously warned critical infrastructure providers about threats from Russia, amid growing concerns over potential sabotage and cyberattacks, although Russia denies conducting hybrid attacks against Western countries.
Notably, in June 2025, the Palestine Action protest group, now designated a terrorist organization, breached a British military air base in central England, highlighting ongoing security challenges.
