Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar emphasized the importance of dialogue, diplomacy, and peaceful conflict resolution during multiple meetings held on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly session in New York.
In a significant development, PM Shehbaz met with Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, reaffirming Pakistan’s unwavering support for Lebanon’s sovereignty, political independence, unity, and territorial integrity. The two leaders reviewed the strong bilateral ties and pledged to deepen cooperation across trade, investment, defense, and institutional frameworks. They also exchanged perspectives on recent developments in the Middle East and the broader region. Shehbaz called for an immediate halt to hostilities, strict observance of ceasefire agreements, a full Israeli withdrawal from occupied Lebanese territories, and complete implementation of UN Security Council resolutions. Expressing concern over ongoing incursions into Lebanon, the prime minister underscored Pakistan’s solidarity with Lebanon’s pursuit of peace, stability, and prosperity.
Meanwhile, Shehbaz highlighted the critical role of dialogue and diplomacy in resolving regional conflicts during his meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. Their discussions covered the pressing challenges facing both the region and the world. The prime minister reiterated Pakistan’s firm support for the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and statehood and raised alarm over rising Islamophobia and the threat of terrorism originating from Afghanistan. He appreciated Guterres’ recognition of Pakistan’s contributions to international peace, counterterrorism efforts, and regional stability. Shehbaz also recalled Guterres’ visit to Pakistan during the devastating 2022 floods, noting the UN chief’s visits to affected areas in Sindh and Balochistan.
Additionally, Shehbaz stressed the significance of ensuring freedom of commercial navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, emphasizing that safe passage of vessels is vital for regional peace and stability.
In another key interaction, PM Shehbaz met with Bangladeshi Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to review bilateral relations. Both leaders expressed satisfaction with the positive trajectory of Pakistan-Bangladesh ties and agreed to enhance collaboration in areas such as trade, investment, connectivity, education, tourism, and people-to-people exchanges. They also discussed regional and global issues, underscoring the need for continued coordination at multilateral platforms, especially the United Nations. Shehbaz congratulated Bangladesh on assuming the presidency of the 81st UN General Assembly and pledged Pakistan’s support for advancing the UN’s goals.
Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar also engaged in diplomatic discussions, meeting Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi during the UNGA session. The two officials reviewed bilateral relations and exchanged views on regional and international developments, agreeing to maintain close communication moving forward.
