On Monday, President Asif Ali Zardari delivered a powerful address to a joint session of Pakistan’s parliament, underscoring the urgent need for India to abandon its aggressive stance and engage in meaningful negotiations. He warned that continued hostility could lead India to face yet another humiliating setback, emphasizing that Pakistan has only revealed a small portion of its defensive capabilities so far. “Make no mistake,” he declared firmly, “we are fully prepared to defend our sovereignty.” This statement came amid heightened tensions in the region, reflecting Pakistan’s resolve to protect its national interests.

President Zardari placed special emphasis on the issue of Jammu and Kashmir, reiterating Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to the rights and aspirations of its people. He stressed that regional security remains Pakistan’s foremost priority and pledged that the country would persist in offering its strongest diplomatic and moral backing to the Kashmiri cause. This stance aligns with Pakistan’s long-standing policy of supporting Kashmiris in their struggle for justice and self-determination, a subject that continues to shape relations between Pakistan and India.

During the parliamentary session, the atmosphere was charged with political tension as opposition members voiced their dissent by chanting slogans against the president. Despite the protests, the gathering included key figures such as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, provincial governors, diplomats, and other senior officials, highlighting the significance of the address. President Zardari took the opportunity to commend the Pakistan Armed Forces for their professionalism and discipline, particularly in recent military operations named “Marka-e-Haq” and “Ghazab lil-Haq.” These operations demonstrated Pakistan’s readiness to respond decisively to any aggression along both its eastern and western borders.

He made it clear that while Pakistan prefers peace, it will never hesitate to defend itself when provoked. “War is always our last resort,” he explained, “but the soil of Pakistan is sacred, and we will not allow any domestic or foreign entity to exploit neighbouring territories to destabilise our peace and security.” This firm stance reflects Pakistan’s broader security doctrine, which seeks to maintain stability within its borders while addressing external threats.

Turning to wider regional dynamics, President Zardari condemned ongoing conflicts such as the war in Iran and the recent attacks in the Gulf region. He called for restraint, dialogue, and respect for the sovereignty of all nations involved, emphasizing the importance of peaceful coexistence in a volatile neighbourhood. Additionally, he highlighted Pakistan’s diplomatic relations with major global players, including the United States, China, Gulf countries, and Bangladesh, reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to fostering strong international partnerships. He also reiterated Pakistan’s steadfast support for the Palestinian cause, underscoring the country’s role in advocating for justice on the global stage.

On the domestic front, the president addressed several pressing issues, including the state of the economy, the importance of provincial autonomy, and the need for focused development in Balochistan. He stressed the urgency of energy sector reforms, poverty reduction strategies, and initiatives aimed at empowering women across the country. President Zardari urged lawmakers to prioritize national sovereignty, enhance anti-terrorism efforts, and promote inclusive economic growth that benefits all segments of society. His remarks reflected a comprehensive vision for Pakistan’s progress and stability.

Reflecting on Pakistan’s democratic journey, President Zardari paid tribute to the nation’s founding fathers, including Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, and Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto. He highlighted the significance of the 18th Amendment, which restored the presidency’s role as a unifying symbol and guardian of the constitution. In closing, he called upon all citizens and political leaders to work together to preserve national unity, protect the country’s borders, strengthen economic resilience, and create opportunities for every Pakistani to thrive in a peaceful and prosperous environment.
