US President Donald Trump announced that artificial intelligence will be a major topic during his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday. However, he expressed a preference to keep AI regulation unchanged, stating that both leaders share this stance.
In a social media post, Trump referred to artificial intelligence as “Super Intelligence (SI),” his favored term, and emphasized his intention to “leave it exactly where it is.” He noted that China holds a similar position and highlighted the US Department of Justice as the primary regulatory authority overseeing AI.
Last week, Trump downplayed industry concerns about AI misuse, asserting that existing US guardrails are sufficient to regulate and prosecute AI companies. This comes amid growing public unease following warnings from an Anthropic researcher who cautioned that AI technology could potentially threaten humanity by the decade’s end.
Xi’s visit to Washington occurs against this backdrop of heightened apprehension, though analysts suggest that fierce competition in AI development may limit the possibility of any substantial agreements beyond symbolic gestures.
Throughout his second term, Trump has largely dismissed fears surrounding AI, instead embracing technology companies. He recently criticized AI detractors, suggesting they might be politically motivated or influenced by foreign interests, including China.
Notably, several leading figures from the American tech industry were expected to attend the state dinner at the White House on Thursday in honor of Xi. Attendees included Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, Alphabet’s Sundar Pichai, OpenAI’s Sam Altman, Apple’s Tim Cook, Tesla’s Elon Musk, and Nvidia’s Jensen Huang.
