Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif underscored the critical role of the European Union’s Generalised Scheme of Preferences Plus (GSP Plus) trade framework in advancing Pakistan’s economic growth, job creation, and export expansion. This emphasis came as Pakistan seeks to enhance its comprehensive partnership with the EU.
During a meeting with European Council President António Luís Santos da Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly session, Shehbaz reaffirmed Pakistan’s dedication to strengthening ties with the EU and fully executing the Pakistan-EU Strategic Engagement Plan. The discussions covered the entire scope of Pakistan-EU relations, with all parties expressing satisfaction over the increasing frequency of high-level interactions and cooperation.
Shehbaz highlighted the necessity of consistent leadership-level dialogue, noting that regular top-tier contacts would provide clearer guidance and accelerate bilateral relations. He reiterated the significance of the EU’s GSP Plus framework for Pakistan’s economic development, employment opportunities, and trade relations with the bloc, affirming Pakistan’s ongoing commitment to this engagement.
In a significant development, the leaders also exchanged perspectives on regional and global issues, emphasizing the importance of dialogue, diplomacy, adherence to international law, and peaceful dispute resolution.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed the EU’s appreciation for its partnership with Pakistan, highlighting that the Strategic Engagement Plan reflects the depth of their relationship and shared values such as democracy, rule of law, human rights, and civic space. She also noted joint efforts on stability and security.
Von der Leyen acknowledged Pakistan’s proactive role in mediating tensions between the United States and Iran, commending Islamabad’s contribution to de-escalation, dialogue, and peaceful conflict resolution. The discussions further explored ways to advance the partnership, including enhancing trade cooperation and addressing illegal migration.
Shehbaz extended an invitation to the presidents of the European Council and European Commission to visit Pakistan, expressing his country’s eagerness to collaborate closely with EU leadership to deepen their mutually beneficial relationship.
