Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to fostering regional peace and facilitating dialogue between Iran and the United States. He made these remarks during an event at the United Nations headquarters in New York, commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Declaration on the Right to Development.
Highlighting the significance of the declaration, the prime minister emphasized that every individual is entitled to pursue a better future. He noted that the declaration, adopted four decades ago, firmly established development as a fundamental right of all people.
Shehbaz Sharif clarified that the core message of the declaration extends beyond wealth creation, stressing that development should also promote social progress and uphold human dignity. He pointed out that developing countries face severe constraints due to debt servicing, which limits their fiscal capacity, while climate-related disasters further exacerbate these challenges.
Turning to regional affairs, the prime minister expressed Pakistan’s unwavering hope and ongoing efforts to achieve peace. He revealed that Islamabad is actively working towards securing a ceasefire between Iran and the United States, underscoring Pakistan’s desire for stability in the region.
Shehbaz Sharif also referenced the Islamabad Agreement, which was signed by former US President Donald Trump, Iran, and Pakistan, as a foundation for these peace efforts. When questioned about the prospects of a meeting between Iran and the US, he confirmed that Pakistan is striving to bring both parties back to the negotiating table.
