Pakistan’s Security Forces Inflict Heavy Losses on Taliban in Ongoing Operation

Pakistan’s security forces have launched a robust military campaign against Afghan Taliban militants, resulting in significant casualties and strategic gains. Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar revealed that since the commencement of the operation, codenamed Operation Ghazab Lil Haq, Pakistani forces have neutralized 415 Taliban fighters and inflicted injuries on another 580. This retaliatory offensive marks a decisive response to recent cross-border attacks that Islamabad describes as unprovoked and a direct threat to national security.

The operation was triggered by a series of hostile incursions from Taliban-controlled areas in Afghanistan, which have long strained relations between the two neighbours. These developments have further escalated tensions along the Durand Line, the porous and often contested border separating Pakistan and Afghanistan. The Pakistani military’s response aims not only to neutralize immediate threats but also to dismantle the Taliban’s operational capabilities in the border regions.

Minister Tarar detailed the extensive damage inflicted on Taliban infrastructure during the offensive. Pakistani forces have reportedly destroyed 182 Taliban checkposts, which served as strategic outposts for militant activities. Additionally, troops have seized control of 31 key positions previously held by the insurgents. The military campaign has also targeted Taliban heavy weaponry, with 115 tanks, armoured vehicles, and artillery pieces reported destroyed. Air strikes have played a crucial role, with 46 Taliban military sites across Afghanistan being hit to weaken their operational strength.

Ground operations have been particularly intense. On February 28, Pakistani troops advanced beyond the border fence in North Waziristan during daylight hours, moving towards a central Taliban post. The militants reportedly retreated upon witnessing the advance, allowing Pakistani forces to secure the area, clear adjacent compounds, and replace Taliban flags with national insignia. In another significant action in the Kurram sector, Pakistani forces used explosives to demolish an Afghan Taliban checkpost, resulting in several militant casualties.

These developments indicate mounting pressure on the Taliban administration from multiple fronts. Pakistani officials have expressed confidence that the operation will continue until all strategic objectives are met, aiming to restore stability and prevent further cross-border hostilities. However, it is important to note that these claims have not been independently verified, and Afghan sources have offered contrasting accounts regarding the scale of casualties and the nature of the clashes.

The situation along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border remains highly volatile, with ongoing clashes underscoring the fragile security environment in the region. Both countries continue to grapple with the challenges posed by militant groups operating across the border, complicating efforts to achieve lasting peace. As the operation progresses, the international community is closely monitoring developments, aware of the broader implications for regional stability.
