In Karachi’s Surjani Town, a man accused of killing a woman and her three children was shot dead in a police encounter on Friday. This occurred a day after officials arrested him and obtained a confession related to the crime.
The police took the suspect to a drain to retrieve the alleged murder weapon. During the recovery operation, the suspect reportedly seized a police officer’s pistol and opened fire. One officer was injured, prompting other officers to return fire, resulting in the suspect’s death at the scene.
West DIG Irfan Baloch stated that the suspect was identified through eyewitness testimonies, mobile phone data, and other technical evidence. The suspect allegedly confessed to the killings during interrogation.
The tragic incident took place earlier this week in Sector 7-D, Surjani Town, where the man is accused of murdering the woman and her three children at their home. The crimes came to light on Monday night when the woman’s husband, an electrician working at a shopping center on Rashid Minhas Road, returned home to find the house dark and discovered the bloodied bodies after turning on the lights.
One child was critically injured and later died at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC). The husband informed his brother-in-law and relatives before contacting the police emergency helpline.
A case was registered on Tuesday by the children’s grandfather, Muhammad Yameen, under Sections 302 (premeditated murder) and 34 (common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code against unknown suspects.
Investigators believe the attack was premeditated, with the suspect attempting to stage the scene as a robbery. The suspect reportedly switched off his mobile phone before approaching the house, traveled by Qingqi rickshaw instead of motorcycle, and broke open a children’s money box and scattered clothes to simulate a burglary. However, early investigations concluded the killings were targeted.
Police Surgeon Dr. Summaiya Syed confirmed that all four victims suffered severe head and brain injuries, causing extensive damage to brain tissues.
Eyewitness accounts played a crucial role in identifying the suspect. A woman, whose husband worked as a security guard and was friends with the victim, reported seeing only one man enter the house around 1 to 1:30 a.m. Another witness saw the suspect leaving the area after the murders. These testimonies, combined with mobile data analysis, led police to the suspect.
Authorities found no evidence of a prior relationship between the suspect and the woman. The woman resisted the attack, which contradicted any claims of a personal relationship. The suspect was reportedly the husband of the victims’ paternal aunt and attacked the family in the absence of the children’s father.
Before the encounter, the suspect reportedly revealed he had disposed of the murder weapon in a drain. Police teams were searching the drain when the encounter occurred. His mobile phone remains missing, possibly taken by someone among the 2,000 to 2,500 people who gathered at the crime scene before police arrived. Investigators are examining the disappearance of the phone.
The suspect’s death marks a new phase in the investigation, with ongoing efforts to recover the murder weapon and fully understand the circumstances of the killings. The police account of the encounter, including the claim that the suspect fired at officers, has not been independently verified.
