Islamabad is intensifying its diplomatic initiatives to help resolve the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Foreign Secretary Asim Iftikhar Ahmad emphasized that Pakistan is committed to seeking a peaceful resolution through dialogue and frameworks supported by the United Nations and the international community.

Addressing the deteriorating regional situation, Ahmad stated that Pakistan’s primary goal is to facilitate a ceasefire, ease tensions, and encourage all parties to return to negotiations. He underscored that the UN Security Council Charter advocates for resolving disputes through diplomatic means rather than armed conflict.

In a significant development, the foreign secretary acknowledged the worsening conditions but affirmed Pakistan’s determination to contribute constructively to preventing further escalation. He highlighted Pakistan’s active role during the Iran-US confrontation, noting that Islamabad was among the leading nations engaged in diplomatic efforts during that period.

Ahmad also referenced the Makkah agreement, which involves Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Turkiye, describing it as a platform through which Islamabad is assuming greater responsibility to foster peace and stability across the region. He stressed that the collective objective of this trilateral agreement is to promote regional harmony.

The remarks come amid a widening crisis that has impacted Gulf security, energy infrastructure, and vital maritime routes. The conflict has added pressure on Pakistan as it balances its role as a mediator with its defense commitments to Saudi Arabia under the Makkah agreement.

Pakistan has consistently advocated for dialogue and de-escalation, particularly during the US-Iran tensions. The country has maintained open diplomatic channels through the Islamabad MoU framework, urging conflicting parties to resume negotiations.

Furthermore, Ahmad dismissed claims that the United Nations is ineffective in peace efforts, affirming the organization’s ongoing role in resolving international disputes. He also emphasized that the Palestinian and Kashmir conflicts should be addressed in line with relevant UN Security Council resolutions.
