In a significant move to address the escalating security concerns in the region, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif convened a high-level meeting in Islamabad today. The session brought together top military and civilian officials to conduct an in-depth assessment of both regional and domestic security challenges facing Pakistan. The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the neighborhood, particularly in light of recent developments in the Middle East.

The gathering provided a comprehensive review of the current geopolitical environment, with special attention paid to Pakistan’s strategic role in fostering regional harmony. Officials discussed various diplomatic and security measures aimed at mitigating risks and promoting cooperation among neighboring countries. The situation in Afghanistan was a focal point during the discussions, as participants examined the implications of ongoing instability and its potential impact on Pakistan’s security landscape.

Alongside regional matters, the meeting also evaluated Pakistan’s internal security framework. Senior officials presented detailed briefings on the law and order situation across the country, highlighting efforts to strengthen security mechanisms and prevent any threats to public safety. The Prime Minister underscored the need for vigilance and coordination among security agencies to ensure a stable environment for all citizens.

One of the critical issues addressed was the safety and evacuation of Pakistani nationals currently residing in Iran. Following directives from the Prime Minister, the meeting reviewed the ongoing arrangements to facilitate their safe return amid rising tensions in the region. The Foreign Office provided an update on the evacuation process, explaining that Pakistan is coordinating with Azerbaijan to enable a secure transit route for its citizens. This operation reflects the government’s commitment to protecting its people abroad during times of crisis.

The meeting was attended by key figures including Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, and several federal ministers such as Ahsan Iqbal, Mohsin Naqvi, Azam Nazeer Tarar, Ahad Khan Cheema, Attaullah Tarar, and Ali Pervaiz Malik. Special Assistant Tariq Fatemi and other senior civil and military officials also participated, underscoring the high priority given to the issues discussed.

In a related development, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has postponed his scheduled official visit to Russia, which was initially planned for March 2. This decision was taken in response to the rapidly changing and volatile situation in the Middle East and the broader region. The Prime Minister’s Office conveyed to Moscow that the trip would not proceed under the current circumstances, reflecting Pakistan’s cautious approach amid heightened geopolitical tensions.

The postponement of the Moscow visit coincides with the Prime Minister’s convening of this emergency meeting, where critical decisions regarding national security and foreign policy are expected to be finalized. Additionally, the government is deliberating on Pakistan’s participation in the final rites of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, a matter that carries significant diplomatic weight given the sensitive regional context.

Overall, the meeting highlighted Pakistan’s proactive stance in navigating complex regional dynamics while prioritizing the safety of its citizens. The government’s coordinated efforts demonstrate a clear focus on maintaining internal stability and contributing to peace in a turbulent neighborhood.
