Pakistan and UK Agree on Structured Talks to Boost Bilateral Relations

Pakistan and the United Kingdom have committed to creating a structured framework for formal discussions between their foreign ministries. This initiative aims to strengthen bilateral relations and ensure continuous progress in areas of mutual interest.

The agreement was reached during delegation-level talks in London on Thursday, involving Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar and British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband. The meeting took place during Dar’s official visit to the UK and encompassed the entire spectrum of Pakistan-UK relations, focusing on ways to deepen cooperation and maintain sustained high-level engagement.

The new mechanism will establish a formal platform for regular dialogues between the two foreign ministries, covering all facets of bilateral cooperation and enabling systematic review of progress in key sectors.

Both ministers emphasized the significance of ongoing high-level interactions and closer coordination on shared interests, reflecting an effort to institutionalize diplomatic ties between Pakistan and the UK.

Regional and international developments were also a major focus, with particular attention to the evolving situation in the Middle East. Dar briefed Miliband on Pakistan’s diplomatic and mediation efforts aimed at promoting dialogue and easing tensions in the region. The British foreign secretary acknowledged Pakistan’s constructive role in facilitating dialogue, diplomacy, and stability in the Middle East.

This exchange occurred amid persistent regional instability, highlighting the importance both countries place on diplomatic engagement and peaceful conflict resolution.

The talks also addressed developments related to the Indus Waters Treaty. Dar voiced Pakistan’s concerns regarding India’s ongoing violations of its obligations under this 1960 treaty, which governs the sharing of the Indus river system. He stressed the need to uphold international law and respect treaty commitments.

Security issues in the region were another critical topic. Dar conveyed serious worries about terrorist threats originating from Afghan territory and the activities of militant groups based in Afghanistan, which Pakistan considers a threat to its peace and security. Both sides discussed the broader regional security landscape and underscored the importance of continued dialogue to foster peace and stability.

Pakistan has repeatedly urged Afghanistan’s Taliban government to prevent its land from being used by terrorist groups targeting Pakistan. The talks provided an opportunity for Pakistan to express these concerns and seek greater international awareness of the security challenges it faces.

The two ministers also recognized the vital role of the Pakistani diaspora in the UK, which significantly contributes to strengthening the longstanding relationship between the two nations. They acknowledged the diaspora’s impact on people-to-people connections, built over decades through social, cultural, educational, and economic exchanges.

The Pakistani community in the UK has traditionally acted as a bridge between the countries, while bilateral ties span trade, investment, education, security, development, and personal links.

The discussions concluded with a mutual commitment to sustained engagement aimed at advancing peace, stability, and cooperation at both regional and international levels. The agreement to establish a structured mechanism for regular foreign ministry talks is expected to provide a more systematic process for reviewing bilateral relations and coordinating positions on critical regional and global issues.
