China Urges Citizens to Exit Eswatini Citing Security Concerns Amid Taiwan Ties

China has issued a warning to its citizens residing in Eswatini, urging them to depart the country over concerns related to security threats. Eswatini stands out as the only African nation among 12 worldwide that officially recognizes Taiwan diplomatically. This advisory reflects the ongoing geopolitical tensions surrounding Taiwan’s international alliances.

Eswatini’s unique position as Taiwan’s African ally has long been a point of contention in China’s foreign policy, as Beijing insists on the One-China principle and discourages official relations with Taiwan. The move to caution Chinese nationals underscores the heightened sensitivity and potential risks perceived by China in regions supporting Taiwan. It also highlights the broader strategic contest for influence in Africa between China and Taiwan.

In a significant development, this advisory could impact diplomatic dynamics and economic interactions between China and Eswatini. It may also influence other countries with ties to Taiwan, signaling China’s readiness to apply pressure where it perceives challenges to its sovereignty claims. The situation remains a critical example of how Taiwan’s diplomatic relationships continue to affect international security and diplomacy.
