Trump Threatens 50% Tariffs on Cars Amid Trade Dispute with Canada

President Donald Trump declared that tariffs on cars, trucks, automotive parts, and steel imported from Canada will increase to 50 percent beginning January 1, 2027. This announcement came via a social media post on Monday, following the breakdown of trade negotiations between the US and Canada over the weekend.

Trump emphasized that vehicles manufactured within the United States would face no tariffs, asserting, “Build in the US, and there are ZERO TARIFFS. Canada will be treated like a State no longer!” He further criticized Canada, describing them as difficult trading partners who feel entitled, while asserting that the US does not depend on Canada as much as Canada depends on the US.

Meanwhile, neither the White House nor Canadian government officials immediately provided comments or clarifications regarding the threatened tariff increase. The failure to reach a trade agreement late Friday saw both countries blaming each other, with Canada preparing retaliatory tariffs on certain US goods in response to the 50 percent levies imposed by Trump on Canadian products.

Major automobile manufacturers have yet to issue statements concerning the tariff threat. However, several auto industry executives, speaking anonymously, expressed doubt about the seriousness of Trump’s announcement. They pointed out that the president has previously threatened high tariffs that were never implemented and warned that such a steep tariff would likely provoke significant retaliatory measures from Canada.

Notably, these executives also highlighted that the January 2027 deadline is several years away and that the timing of the threat—coming after the November midterm elections—could be a strategic move to restart stalled trade discussions.
