Mass Wedding Scam in India Leaves Over 40 Grooms Without Brides

In a significant development from Madhya Pradesh, India, over 40 grooms were left stranded at a mass wedding event when their brides did not show up, revealing a large-scale marriage fraud. The incident has shocked local communities and raised concerns about deceptive matchmaking practices.

Abhishek Verma’s family had been searching for a suitable bride when a man from a nearby village approached them, presenting himself as a marriage matchmaker. He convinced families that they could choose an orphan girl from a photo album and pay approximately $200 to participate in a collective wedding ceremony.

On the scheduled wedding day in late May, around 8 a.m., about 40 grooms, including Verma, arrived at the venue dressed in traditional wedding attire. However, the anticipated brides never appeared, leaving the grooms waiting for several hours before realizing they had been deceived.

Police officer Preeti Katare revealed that the victims were men aged between 20 and 40, primarily from rural areas. She also noted that the actual number of victims might be higher, as some may have refrained from reporting the scam due to feelings of shame.

Authorities have registered cases against the alleged matchmaker and his accomplices and have initiated a formal investigation into the fraudulent scheme. The case highlights the vulnerabilities faced by rural communities in matrimonial arrangements and the need for increased vigilance.
