Intense Clashes Erupt Between Pakistan and Afghan Taliban Amid Diplomatic Push

The conflict between Pakistan and the Afghan Taliban escalated into its third consecutive day on Saturday, following a series of intense overnight skirmishes. This surge in hostilities comes amid growing international concern, with multiple global actors urging both sides to engage in immediate diplomatic negotiations to avoid further deterioration of the situation.

On Friday, Pakistan launched a series of airstrikes targeting Taliban military installations and strategic posts in key Afghan cities, including Kabul and Kandahar. These strikes represent one of the most significant Pakistani military operations inside Afghanistan in recent years. Islamabad justifies these actions as a necessary response to cross-border attacks allegedly carried out by militants affiliated with the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), a group Pakistan accuses of using Afghan territory as a safe haven to orchestrate insurgent activities within Pakistan. The Taliban, however, have consistently denied these allegations, rejecting claims that they provide sanctuary to TTP fighters.

While Pakistan frames its military campaign as a defensive measure against ongoing assaults, the Afghan Taliban government has condemned the incursions as a violation of Afghanistan’s sovereignty. Despite this, Kabul has expressed willingness to pursue dialogue to resolve tensions but has also cautioned that any escalation into a broader conflict could have severe consequences for regional stability. The fighting threatens to entrench a prolonged and volatile conflict along the rugged and porous 2,600-kilometer border that separates the two countries.

In response to the rising tensions, diplomatic efforts intensified late Friday. Afghanistan’s Foreign Minister, Amir Khan Muttaqi, engaged in a telephone conversation with Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister, Prince Faisal bin Farhan, focusing on measures to de-escalate the situation and maintain open communication channels. Meanwhile, the European Union called on both parties to reduce hostilities and seek peaceful dialogue, emphasizing the urgent need for restraint. The United Nations also appealed for an immediate cessation of violence, highlighting the risk of humanitarian fallout if the conflict continues unchecked.

Major global powers have voiced their positions on the crisis. Russia urged both Pakistan and the Taliban to halt fighting and return to the negotiating table, while China expressed deep concern over the developments and offered to assist in calming tensions. The United States reaffirmed Pakistan’s right to defend itself against attacks attributed to the Taliban, with a State Department spokesperson clarifying that Washington does not view Pakistan as the aggressor in this escalation. A U.S. official, speaking anonymously, acknowledged the security pressures Islamabad faces and expressed hope that the situation would not spiral further out of control.

Despite diplomatic overtures, clashes along the border continued overnight. Pakistani military sources revealed that an operation named “Ghazab Lil Haq” remains active, with Pakistani forces reportedly destroying multiple Taliban positions and camps across various sectors. Independent verification of these claims remains unavailable. Both sides have reported significant casualties, though the figures differ markedly. Pakistan claims that 12 of its soldiers and 274 Taliban fighters have been killed, whereas the Taliban report 13 of their fighters and 55 Pakistani soldiers dead. Additionally, Taliban deputy spokesman Hamdullah Fitrat stated that 19 civilians lost their lives and 26 others were injured in the Khost and Paktika provinces, though these numbers have not been independently confirmed.

Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif expressed frustration over the ongoing conflict, stating that “our cup of patience has overflowed” and describing the situation as “open war.” He warned that Pakistan would continue to retaliate against any further attacks. On the other side, Taliban Interior Minister Sirajuddin Haqqani, speaking in Khost province, acknowledged the heavy costs of the conflict and noted that Taliban forces have not expanded their deployment beyond the areas already engaged in fighting. Haqqani emphasized the Taliban’s resilience, attributing their endurance to unity, solidarity, and perseverance rather than advanced military technology.

It is important to highlight the stark contrast in military capabilities between the two sides. Pakistan fields a large, well-equipped standing army numbering in the hundreds of thousands, supported by a modern air force. Conversely, the Taliban lack a conventional air force and primarily rely on light weaponry and ground troops. Nevertheless, the Taliban’s fighters are battle-hardened, having waged a two-decade insurgency against U.S.-led forces before regaining control of Afghanistan in 2021. This experience continues to shape their approach to the ongoing conflict with Pakistan.

As the situation remains volatile, the international community continues to monitor developments closely, urging restraint and dialogue to prevent a wider regional crisis. The coming days will be critical in determining whether diplomatic channels can prevail over military confrontation along this historically contentious border.
