Mandatory Hepatitis C Testing Introduced for CNIC and Overseas Travel

The government has announced that undergoing a Hepatitis C test will become a mandatory requirement for citizens applying for their Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC) as well as for those planning to travel abroad. This new regulation is part of broader efforts to control the spread of Hepatitis C, a viral infection that poses significant health risks if left undetected and untreated. The move is expected to facilitate early diagnosis and timely treatment, reducing the burden of this disease on the healthcare system.

Hepatitis C is a bloodborne virus that can lead to chronic liver disease, cirrhosis, and even liver cancer if not managed properly. Pakistan has one of the highest prevalence rates of Hepatitis C globally, making such preventive measures crucial for public health. By integrating mandatory testing into the CNIC issuance and foreign travel processes, authorities aim to identify infected individuals early and curb transmission within communities.

In a significant development, this policy could also impact international travel protocols, as many countries require health clearances for entry. The mandatory testing is expected to raise awareness about Hepatitis C and encourage more people to seek treatment. Meanwhile, healthcare providers will need to prepare for increased testing demand and ensure adequate resources for follow-up care and counseling services.
