Pakistan Takes Over Presidency of UN Conference on Disarmament

Pakistan has officially taken on the presidency of the United Nations Conference on Disarmament (CD) in Geneva, with Ambassador Tahir Hussain Andrabi leading the meetings on behalf of the country. This marks a significant role for Pakistan in guiding the Conference’s agenda and proceedings throughout 2026.

Meanwhile, Pakistan has initiated consultations with former presidents of the Conference as well as representatives from various regional groups to ensure a collaborative approach during its tenure. Under Pakistan’s leadership, the Conference will conduct its final session for the year, concluding its annual activities.

During this period, the Conference will review its annual report and engage in negotiations on the relevant resolution at the UN General Assembly’s First Committee. The Conference on Disarmament, which includes 65 member states—among them all nuclear-armed countries—functions as the only multilateral forum dedicated to arms control and disarmament treaty negotiations worldwide.

Notably, the Conference focuses on critical issues such as halting the nuclear arms race, preventing nuclear conflict, and avoiding the militarization of outer space. It has historically played a vital role in shaping major international agreements, including treaties banning biological and chemical weapons and the comprehensive nuclear test ban treaty.

In a significant development, Pakistan’s presidency is seen as a reflection of the global community’s trust in its diplomatic capabilities. It also underscores Pakistan’s active participation in international efforts toward arms control, disarmament, and the promotion of peace and security.
