Susan Sarandon Commends Spain’s Bold Support for Gaza Amid Global Tensions

Barcelona witnessed a heartfelt moment on Friday as veteran Hollywood actress Susan Sarandon openly applauded the Spanish government for its unwavering support of Gaza. Speaking with visible emotion, Sarandon emphasized that Spain’s position places it firmly “on the right side of history,” a sentiment that resonates deeply amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

During a press interaction in Barcelona, Sarandon expressed admiration for the efforts of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, describing his leadership as courageous and morally clear. She also praised prominent Spanish figures, including Oscar-winning actor Javier Bardem, for their vocal advocacy on behalf of Palestine. Sarandon’s remarks underscored the importance of such public stances, especially coming from influential personalities who use their platforms to highlight humanitarian issues.

“When you switch on the television and witness Spain’s resolute and principled approach to this crisis, it offers a sense of solidarity and hope,” Sarandon said, her voice quivering with passion. She contrasted Spain’s openness with the atmosphere in the United States, which she characterized as a place where repression and censorship often silence dissenting voices on this matter. This comparison highlighted the unique role Spain is playing on the international stage by openly supporting Palestinian rights.

Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has emerged as one of the most vocal European leaders condemning Israel’s military actions in Gaza. Notably, Sanchez has gone beyond diplomatic caution by labeling the conflict a “genocide,” a rare and bold characterization among Western politicians. His government’s decision in 2024 to officially recognize Palestine as a state marked a significant departure from many European allies and sparked strong criticism from Israel. Sarandon acknowledged Sanchez’s consistent stance, remarking that every time she has encountered him, he has clearly aligned himself with justice and historical truth. She even lightheartedly described him as “handsome and tall,” adding a personal touch to her praise.

In response, Pedro Sanchez expressed his gratitude on social media, noting how meaningful it was to receive such commendation from an internationally respected actress like Sarandon. He highlighted the deep admiration she commands across Spain, making her public endorsement of the country’s position all the more impactful.

Sarandon’s visit to Barcelona coincides with her receiving a prestigious lifetime achievement award at the Goya Awards, Spain’s premier film ceremony. Her illustrious career includes winning the Best Actress Oscar in 1996 for her role in “Dead Man Walking,” where she portrayed a nun advocating for a death row inmate. This accolade further cements her status as a powerful voice both on and off the screen, now extending her influence into the realm of international human rights advocacy.
