EU Urges Calm and Dialogue Amid Rising Tensions on Pakistan-Afghanistan Border

The European Union has issued a strong appeal for both Pakistan and Afghanistan to exercise restraint and seek peaceful solutions amid escalating clashes along their shared border. The rising tensions between these neighboring countries have raised alarms in the international community, prompting calls for urgent diplomatic engagement to prevent further deterioration of security in the region.

In an official statement released from Brussels on Friday, the EU emphasized the critical need for both Islamabad and Kabul to de-escalate the conflict through dialogue rather than military means. The bloc expressed deep concern over the recent surge in violence, which threatens to destabilize an already fragile South Asian security landscape. The EU’s foreign policy leadership highlighted that sustained regional stability is essential not only for the immediate area but also for broader international peace and security.

Kaja Kallas, the EU’s foreign policy chief, voiced serious apprehension regarding the worsening security conditions along the border. She underscored the responsibility of the Afghan de facto authorities to take decisive measures against terrorist groups operating within their territory. Kallas reiterated the EU’s firm stance that Afghan soil must not be used as a base for hostile actions against neighboring countries, stressing that such activities undermine efforts to build peace and trust in the region.

Meanwhile, Turkey has actively engaged in diplomatic efforts to ease tensions between Islamabad and Kabul. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan conducted separate phone calls with Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, as well as Afghanistan’s Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi. These discussions focused on the evolving security situation and explored avenues for reducing conflict through constructive dialogue and cooperation. Turkey’s involvement reflects its growing role as a regional mediator seeking to foster stability in South Asia.

In addition to Turkey’s mediation, Iran has also stepped forward with an offer to facilitate reconciliation between the two neighbors. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi expressed Tehran’s readiness to support initiatives aimed at promoting dialogue and peaceful coexistence. Iran’s proposal to play a sincere and constructive role highlights the shared interest of regional players in preventing further escalation and encouraging diplomatic solutions to longstanding disputes.

The situation along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border remains tense, with sporadic clashes threatening to spiral into broader conflict. The international community’s calls for restraint and dialogue underscore the urgent need for both sides to prioritize peace and stability. As diplomatic efforts continue, the hope is that these interventions by the EU, Turkey, and Iran will help pave the way for a lasting resolution that benefits the people of both countries and the wider region.
