Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif Warns India Over Indus Waters Treaty Suspension

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has issued a stern warning to India following New Delhi’s unilateral suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty. This treaty, signed in 1960, is a crucial water-sharing agreement between the two countries, governing the distribution of the Indus River waters. Sharif described India’s move as illegal and a serious breach of the treaty’s terms, which have historically helped manage water resources despite tense bilateral relations.

The Indus Waters Treaty has long been considered a cornerstone of peace and cooperation between Pakistan and India, even during periods of conflict. It allocates the waters of six rivers in the Indus basin, with Pakistan receiving rights over the western rivers and India over the eastern ones. The treaty’s suspension by India raises concerns about potential water security issues for Pakistan, which relies heavily on these rivers for agriculture and drinking water.

In a significant development, Sharif’s warning underscores the potential for escalating tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors over natural resources. The international community has often urged both countries to uphold the treaty to avoid conflict. Pakistan’s response signals its intent to defend its water rights vigorously, highlighting the broader geopolitical implications of water disputes in South Asia.
