Pakistan has officially introduced its first lunar rover, named “Jinnah-1,” as announced by the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) on Thursday. The rover’s name pays tribute to Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan, symbolizing the nation’s growing ambitions in space exploration.
The name was selected following a nationwide competition inviting public suggestions. SUPARCO received over 4,000 entries, reflecting widespread enthusiasm for the country’s expanding space program. After a thorough review, a jury chose “Jinnah-1” as the official name, with seven participants having proposed it.
Since multiple entrants suggested the winning name, a draw was conducted during a special ceremony to determine the final winner. Seventeen-year-old Tayyab Karim from Bahawalnagar emerged as the successful participant.
At the event, SUPARCO Chairman Muhammad Yousuf Khan commended the public’s active involvement and emphasized the significance of naming the rover after Pakistan’s founder. He described “Jinnah-1” as more than a name, calling it a symbol of resilience, determination, and progress inspired by Quaid-e-Azam’s legacy.
Khan stated that this naming sends a powerful message about Pakistan’s readiness to uphold the founder’s vision and leadership as the nation ventures into new frontiers, particularly lunar exploration.
Scheduled for deployment in 2029, Jinnah-1 will be part of China’s Chang’E-8 mission, targeting the Moon’s south polar region. This area is of great scientific interest due to the potential presence of water ice and its importance for future lunar missions.
The rover will carry advanced scientific instruments to conduct various research activities on the lunar surface. Its objectives include studying lunar plasma and radiation, mapping the Moon’s geographical features, and performing experiments to support ongoing lunar research.
Additionally, Jinnah-1’s scientific investigations aim to contribute valuable data toward establishing a sustainable human presence on the Moon in the future. This mission marks a pivotal advancement for Pakistan’s space program, expanding its scope from satellite operations to active surface exploration.
Pakistan’s involvement in Chang’E-8 also represents a significant step in strengthening scientific and technological collaboration with China. The Chang’E program has already achieved notable milestones in lunar exploration, including sample returns and complex surface operations.
Chang’E-8 is viewed as a precursor to China’s broader lunar research ambitions and technological development for future exploration. For Pakistan, deploying Jinnah-1 offers a unique opportunity for its scientists and engineers to gain firsthand experience in lunar surface research and planetary exploration system development.
The rover’s indigenous scientific capabilities will provide Pakistani researchers with access to lunar environmental data, supporting future advancements in space science and exploration.
SUPARCO highlighted that the enthusiastic response to the naming contest reflects strong public interest in Pakistan’s space endeavors. With Jinnah-1, Pakistan is poised to embark on a historic phase of its space program by sending a domestically developed lunar rover to the Moon, showcasing the country’s scientific and engineering expertise on an international stage.
