Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem achieved a 77.41-metre throw on his second attempt during the men’s javelin final at the Commonwealth Games, after his first effort was ruled a foul. Meanwhile, India’s Neeraj Chopra extended his lead at Scotstoun Stadium with an impressive 85.83-metre throw, improving on his opening 80.97 metres. Ben East secured second place with a throw of 81.12 metres.

Nadeem now faces the challenge of significantly improving his next throw to stay in contention for a medal, as the competition has already surpassed the 80-metre mark. the rules, after the initial three attempts, only the top eight athletes will proceed in the final, while the remaining four will be eliminated.

The final commenced at 8:15 pm local time in Edinburgh, equivalent to 12:15 am in Pakistan, drawing considerable attention due to the renewed rivalry between Nadeem and Chopra. Notably, Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Pathirage also emerged as a strong contender by entering the medal round after topping the qualification standings the previous day.

Before the final, Nadeem appealed to his supporters for prayers, expressing hope to deliver a strong performance and make Pakistan proud. Reports highlighted that the Olympic champion had urged fans to keep him in their thoughts ahead of the medal contest.

In Thursday’s qualification round, Pathirage led with a best throw of 82.84 metres, followed by Grenada’s Anderson Peters at 81.29 metres and South Africa’s Douw Smit at 80.84 metres. None of the 12 finalists managed to surpass the automatic qualification mark of 84 metres, as cold and windy weather conditions impacted performances across the board.

Chopra qualified fifth with a throw of 79.61 metres, while Nadeem secured seventh place with a best effort of 78.63 metres. The Pakistan Olympic Association confirmed Nadeem’s spot in the final following his qualification throw.

The final features several of the world’s top javelin throwers, including major championship medallists and leading finishers from the Paris Olympics. Nadeem competes as the defending Commonwealth Games champion and reigning Olympic champion. He claimed Commonwealth gold in 2022 with a Games-record throw of 90.18 metres and made history at the Paris Olympics with a 92.97-metre throw, earning Pakistan its first individual Olympic gold medal and setting a new Olympic record.

Chopra remains one of the most accomplished javelin throwers in the field, holding a dominant head-to-head record against Nadeem and having won major titles at the Olympics, World Championships, Asian Games, and Diamond League events.

In a significant development, Pathirage’s recent form adds a fresh dynamic to the competition. The Sri Lankan athlete has been among the standout performers of the season and aims to convert his qualification success into a Commonwealth medal.

With Chopra already surpassing 80 metres on his opening throw and Nadeem still preparing for his next attempt, the final remains highly competitive and unpredictable.
