Venezuela Withdraws from ICC Citing Bias Against Global South

Venezuela has officially decided to pull out of the International Criminal Court (ICC), marking a significant move in its international legal and diplomatic stance. The government has accused the ICC of exhibiting bias against countries from the Global South, suggesting that the court disproportionately targets developing nations while overlooking violations by more powerful states. This withdrawal reflects Venezuela’s growing skepticism towards international institutions perceived as influenced by Western powers.

Notably, the ICC was established to prosecute individuals for crimes such as genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity, aiming to provide justice beyond national jurisdictions. However, several countries from the Global South have criticized the court for selective justice, arguing that it often focuses on African and Latin American nations while ignoring alleged abuses by Western countries. Venezuela’s exit adds to a list of nations questioning the ICC’s impartiality and effectiveness.

In a broader context, Venezuela’s decision could impact its international relations and legal accountability on the global stage. It may also encourage other countries with similar grievances to reconsider their participation in the ICC. Meanwhile, the ICC faces ongoing challenges in maintaining legitimacy and universal support, especially as geopolitical tensions influence perceptions of international justice.
