At least eight individuals, among them four young children, were wounded in a mass shooting in Brooklyn’s Coney Island neighborhood late Saturday night. One woman remains in critical condition following the incident, which unfolded during the US Independence Day holiday weekend.
The shooting took place around 10:37 pm local time (0237 GMT Sunday) on West 31st Street in Brooklyn. This date also marked the 250th anniversary of the United States’ independence, a celebration typically accompanied by large gatherings and fireworks displays.
Officers from the New York City Police Department (NYPD) responded promptly to emergency calls reporting multiple gunshot victims. Upon arrival, they found eight people suffering from various gunshot wounds, all of whom were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.
The victims’ ages range from 6 to 37 years old. The injured children include a 6-year-old boy shot in the stomach, a 7-year-old boy with gunshot wounds to both legs, a 12-year-old boy shot in the leg, and a 14-year-old boy wounded in the thigh.
Among the adults, a 21-year-old woman was critically injured after being shot in the chest. The other seven victims—two men, one woman, and the four children—are reported to be in stable condition.
Authorities recovered a firearm at the scene, but no arrests have been made so far. Details about possible motives or suspect descriptions have not been disclosed. Investigators are actively working to identify persons of interest connected to the shooting.
Mass shootings and gun violence incidents often increase during major holiday weekends in the United States. The NYPD has not provided further comments as the investigation continues.
