Bilawal Vows to Complete Diamer-Bhasha Dam if PPP Wins in Gilgit-Baltistan

In a significant development ahead of the Gilgit-Baltistan elections, PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has promised to complete the Diamer-Bhasha Dam project if his party is elected. The Diamer-Bhasha Dam, a major hydroelectric and water storage project, has been under construction for several years and is seen as vital for Pakistan’s energy security and water management. Bilawal’s commitment highlights the importance of this project in the region’s development agenda.

The Diamer-Bhasha Dam, located on the Indus River, is expected to generate over 4,500 megawatts of electricity and store around 8.1 million acre-feet of water. Its completion is crucial for addressing Pakistan’s chronic energy shortages and mitigating the impacts of climate change on water resources. The project has faced delays due to funding and logistical challenges, making political support essential for its progress.

Bilawal’s pledge reflects the Pakistan People’s Party’s focus on infrastructure development and regional empowerment in Gilgit-Baltistan. If elected, the PPP aims to accelerate the dam’s construction, which could boost local employment and economic growth. This promise also underscores the strategic significance of the dam in Pakistan’s broader energy and water security framework, potentially influencing voter sentiment in the upcoming elections.
