Gomal University Suspends Officials Amid Probe of 514 Suspected Fake Degrees

A comprehensive investigation into alleged issuance of fake degrees and financial irregularities at Gomal University has identified 514 questionable academic credentials, resulting in the suspension of two senior university officials. The probe covers activities between 2019 and 2023, focusing on affiliations and examination processes connected to Punjab College of Elegance in Johar Abad.

Ordered by the university syndicate during its emergency 143rd meeting on May 17, the inquiry aims to scrutinize potential violations of university regulations. A four-member committee was formed under the Gomal University Employees Efficiency and Discipline Statutes 2016 to examine records, gather evidence, record witness statements, and allow the accused to present their defense. The committee is expected to submit its report within 30 days.

In a significant development, former Controller of Examinations Muhammad Wasim Khan, currently Additional Controller of Examinations, has been suspended for 30 days pending the outcome of the investigation. Similarly, former Director Affiliations Riaz Ahmad, now Additional Director Information Technology, was also placed on forced leave for 90 days or until the inquiry concludes. Both officials will continue to receive their salaries and benefits during this period to ensure the investigation proceeds without interference.

Concerns about the university’s affiliation and examination processes date back to previous administrations, with many irregularities uncovered through internal reviews initiated by the current management. The case has drawn strong attention from the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provincial government, which has vowed strict action against those involved.

Higher Education and Local Government Minister Mina Khan Afridi emphasized the government’s commitment to eradicating corruption and dismantling the so-called “fake degree mafia” within the higher education sector. Afridi stated that no one implicated in the scandal would evade accountability and highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen oversight and monitoring of academic institutions under Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur’s leadership.

The minister’s office confirmed the establishment of a new investigation committee and assured that scrutiny of academic and administrative affairs in universities will continue. While the inquiry is still underway, authorities have not yet disclosed whether criminal charges or further disciplinary measures will be pursued. University officials indicated that subsequent actions will be based on the inquiry committee’s final recommendations.
