The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), an online youth movement in India boasting more than 22.3 million followers on Instagram, has announced plans for a street protest in Delhi this Monday. This development adds to the mounting pressure on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration.
Founded by US-based Abhijeet Dipke, the CJP has gained traction by addressing widespread concerns about politics, unemployment, and inflation. The movement has particularly highlighted recent exam paper leaks and alleged inaccuracies in the grading of final-year school exams, issues that students fear could severely impact millions of academic careers.
In a significant development, Dipke declared his intention to return to India to demand the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. On the social media platform X, he called on young people to participate in the protest in Delhi, emphasizing their constitutional right to hold the government accountable. Nearly 800,000 students have reportedly signed a petition supporting Pradhan’s resignation.
The rapid growth of the CJP marks one of the largest online youth dissent movements during Modi’s 12-year tenure. Analysts suggest that despite recent state election successes, the government’s image could be undermined as public frustration intensifies over rising fuel costs and gas shortages linked to the ongoing conflict in Iran.
The party’s name originates from remarks made by India’s Chief Justice Surya Kant, who likened some unemployed youth to cockroaches. Kant later clarified that his comments targeted individuals with fraudulent degrees and were not meant to criticize young people broadly. The CJP’s substantial Instagram following underscores its significant influence among Indian youth.
