Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has arrived in New York for a three-day official visit to participate in a high-level United Nations Security Council (UNSC) debate focused on international peace, security, and multilateral cooperation. This important session is scheduled under China’s rotating presidency of the Security Council for May 2026.

Dar is set to take part in the UNSC Open Debate titled “Maintenance of International Peace and Security: Upholding the Purposes and Principles of the UN Charter and Strengthening the UN-centered International System.” The debate will be chaired by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, emphasizing the significance of reinforcing the UN’s central role in global governance.

Upon his arrival, Dar was welcomed by Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, along with Pakistan’s Consul General in New York, Aamer Ahmad Atozai. During his stay, the deputy prime minister will engage in bilateral discussions with foreign counterparts and senior UN officials, expanding diplomatic dialogue on the sidelines of the UN events.

In a notable development, Pakistan expressed its support for China’s initiative to convene this debate, considering it a timely and essential effort to strengthen multilateralism and address complex international challenges through the United Nations framework.

Additionally, on May 28, Dar is scheduled to attend a meeting of the Group of Friends on Global Governance. This gathering will focus on “Reforming and Improving Global Governance, Working Together to Address Global Challenges,” highlighting Pakistan’s commitment to active participation in global governance reforms.

The Foreign Office reiterated Pakistan’s dedication to multilateralism and its ongoing efforts to contribute constructively to global peace, security, and development initiatives through international cooperation.
