Kevin Costner’s ambitious western saga, initially planned to unfold rapidly, has left fans waiting nearly two years after the release of Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1. The first installment, which debuted in cinemas on June 28, 2024, recently found a new audience on Prime Video, reigniting interest in the long-anticipated sequel, Horizon: Chapter 2.
Originally, the franchise was designed as a four-part series, with the first two films intended to premiere just weeks apart. The sequel was scheduled for release on August 16, 2024. However, these plans were altered following the underwhelming box office performance of the initial film.
Despite high expectations for Costner’s passion project, the first chapter earned roughly $29 million domestically and about $38 million worldwide, falling short of projections. In response, New Line Cinema announced in July 2024 that the release of Horizon: Chapter 2 would be postponed. The studio explained that the delay was meant to allow more time for audiences to discover the first film through its theatrical run and premium video-on-demand platforms.
New Line Cinema emphasized that this strategy would give viewers a better chance to engage with the opening chapter before continuing the story. Supporting this approach, Territory Pictures, the production company behind the saga, expressed confidence that extending the release window could ultimately benefit the sequel by building stronger audience enthusiasm.
Although the sequel’s release date remains unconfirmed, the project has not been shelved. Horizon: Chapter 2 premiered at the Venice Film Festival on September 7, 2024, and was later screened at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival in February 2025, indicating ongoing progress despite theatrical uncertainties.
Costner has also publicly reaffirmed his commitment to the franchise. In November 2024, he shared that he remains determined to continue the story, even humorously mentioning his efforts to secure wealthy investors to support the ambitious project.
For now, fans of Costner’s western saga continue to await the official release of Horizon: Chapter 2, as the sequel’s future remains uncertain but hopeful.
