Karachi Officials to Face FIRs for Billboard Collapses During Monsoon

In a significant development aimed at bolstering public safety during the monsoon season, authorities in Karachi have announced that municipal officers and responsible agencies will face First Information Reports (FIRs) if billboards collapse. This measure comes as a response to frequent incidents where poorly maintained or unsecured billboards have posed serious hazards to pedestrians and motorists during heavy rains and strong winds. The decision underscores the city’s commitment to enforcing stricter safety regulations to prevent accidents and casualties.

Monsoon rains in Karachi often bring challenges such as flooding and infrastructure damage, with billboards being particularly vulnerable due to their exposure to harsh weather conditions. The collapse of these structures has previously resulted in injuries and disruptions, highlighting the urgent need for accountability among those tasked with their maintenance and oversight. By holding municipal officers and agencies legally responsible, the city aims to ensure more rigorous inspections and timely repairs.

Meanwhile, this initiative is expected to prompt better coordination between various departments involved in urban management and disaster preparedness. Notably, it also serves as a warning to private companies and advertisers to adhere to safety standards when installing and maintaining billboards. Overall, this policy could significantly reduce risks during the monsoon season, protecting lives and property in one of Pakistan’s largest and most densely populated cities.
