Ciccone Takes Pink Jersey as Narvaez Wins Giro d’Italia Stage Four

CATANZARO: The fourth stage of the Giro d’Italia witnessed a thrilling contest as Ecuadorian cyclist Narvaez celebrated a triumphant comeback after months away from competition. Having been sidelined since a crash at the Tour Down Under in January, Narvaez’s victory marked his third stage win in the Giro, adding to his previous successes in 2020 and 2024. Reflecting on his achievement, Narvaez highlighted the significance of his win following three months of dedicated training in Ecuador.

The race experienced its first major disruption upon entering Italian territory after the initial three stages held in Bulgaria. A demanding ascent at Cozzo Tunno caused a decisive split in the peloton, reducing the group to just 42 riders vying for the stage victory. This challenging climb proved pivotal in shaping the day’s outcome.

In a significant development, Giulio Ciccone of the Lidl-Trek team seized the prestigious pink jersey. His accumulation of bonus seconds during the stage propelled him into the overall lead, now holding a four-second advantage over his teammate Jan Christen. This intra-team rivalry adds an intriguing dynamic to the race as it progresses.

Meanwhile, the competition faced a setback with the withdrawal of Australian sprinter Kaden Groves. Groves continued to struggle with injuries sustained in a crash during the opening stage, forcing him to abandon the event. Looking ahead, stage five promises a demanding 203-kilometre journey from Praia a Mare to Potenza, featuring a hilly terrain that will test the riders’ endurance and strategy.
