Fernando Tatis Jr responded effectively after San Diego Padres manager Craig Stammen reshuffled the batting order, helping the team secure a 4-2 victory against the St. Louis Cardinals. Following a disappointing 6-0 loss on Friday where the Padres managed only one hit, Stammen reinstated Tatis to the No. 2 spot in the lineup.
The adjustment yielded immediate results on Saturday as Tatis delivered a pivotal two-run single that ultimately decided the game. Despite still seeking his first home run of the season after 39 games, Tatis has faced criticism for his slow power output. Nevertheless, Stammen expressed confidence in Tatis’ plate discipline and growing assurance against opposing pitchers.
“I believe he’s making sound decisions at the plate,” Stammen remarked, emphasizing that pitchers continue to respect Tatis’ presence even without home runs. This season, Tatis holds a .248 batting average with 15 RBIs and nine stolen bases, contributing significantly through speed and situational hitting.
Looking ahead to the series finale on Sunday, the Padres will start Walker Buehler, who holds a 2-2 record with a 5.64 ERA. The Cardinals will counter with Kyle Leahy, boasting a 4-3 record and a 4.93 ERA. San Diego aims to split the series after a closely contested matchup.
