Sandra Lee, the 55-year-old dermatologist known as Dr Pimple Popper, has disclosed that she experienced a stroke during the filming of her popular reality series. She described the event as both shocking and life-changing, initially mistaking the early symptoms for something minor.
Lee recounted that while filming, she suddenly became very sweaty and felt unlike herself, assuming she was having a hot flash. However, after wrapping up the shoot, her condition worsened significantly. She began to feel restless, suffered sharp pain in her leg, and found walking difficult.
By the following morning, her symptoms had intensified. She noticed her hand would slowly collapse when held out and struggled with speech, leading her to suspect she might be having a stroke. An MRI confirmed she had suffered an ischemic stroke, caused by a blockage that restricted blood flow to her brain. Lee explained that a portion of her brain tissue had died as a result.
In response, she immediately stopped filming and embarked on an intensive recovery program involving physical and occupational therapy to regain balance and motor skills. As a surgeon, Lee found the impact on her hands particularly alarming, expressing fear over the lack of full control of her left hand. She also mentioned ongoing challenges with her speech, which has made her more self-conscious.
After two months of rehabilitation, Lee returned to work in January but admitted the experience left lasting emotional scars, including symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder due to the stroke occurring on set. With support from her colleagues, she has resumed her practice and feels she is nearly back to normal, although she continues therapy and remains on blood-thinning medication.
Reflecting on the incident, Lee identified several contributing factors such as uncontrolled blood pressure, high cholesterol, and significant stress. She described the stroke as a wake-up call that has motivated her to prioritize her health going forward.
In a significant development, Lee has chosen to share her story publicly to raise awareness about stroke symptoms and the importance of seeking prompt medical attention. She urged others experiencing similar signs to consult a doctor immediately.
Meanwhile, the new season of Dr Pimple Popper: Breaking Out is scheduled to premiere on April 20, marking Lee’s return to television after her health ordeal.
