Lisa Kudrow has revealed that she often felt overlooked during her tenure on the iconic sitcom Friends, even as the show achieved worldwide acclaim. The actress, best known for portraying Phoebe Buffay, expressed that she was not always regarded with the same seriousness as her fellow cast members, despite the series’ dominance on television throughout the 1990s and early 2000s.
In a recent interview, Kudrow admitted there were times when she felt as if “nobody cared” about her contributions, with some even labeling her as “the sixth Friend.” This candid admission contrasts with her notable success on the show, where she earned an Emmy Award in 1998 for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.
Despite this recognition, Kudrow indicated that expectations for her long-term career were minimal at the time. She remarked that there was no clear vision for her future, and the prevailing belief was that she had merely been “lucky” to secure the role.
Friends, which aired for ten seasons from 1994 to 2004, became one of the most successful sitcoms in television history, propelling its main cast—including Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, David Schwimmer, Matt LeBlanc, and Matthew Perry—to international stardom.
Kudrow also reflected on the significant differences between herself and her character Phoebe. She explained that initially, Phoebe felt very distant from her own personality and required deliberate effort to understand and justify the character’s eccentric behavior. She challenged the common perception of Phoebe as merely a “ditz,” suggesting the character was often misunderstood.
Over the course of the series, Kudrow said she gradually grew more comfortable in the role, with aspects of Phoebe’s personality influencing her own perspective. Recently, the actress has been promoting the final season of her show The Comeback while openly discussing the challenges of aging in Hollywood and how her approach to acting roles has evolved.
Her revelations have reignited discussions among fans, prompting many to reconsider how each Friends cast member was viewed during the show’s peak years.
