Avengers: Doomsday May Release Early to Avoid Dune 3 Box Office Clash

Avengers: Doomsday and Dune 3 are both scheduled to premiere globally on December 18, 2026, setting the stage for a potential box office showdown reminiscent of the Barbenheimer phenomenon. The latest Marvel Cinematic Universe installment, directed by the Russo brothers, faces direct competition from Denis Villeneuve’s much-anticipated sci-fi sequel.

This simultaneous release could significantly impact the earnings of both films, especially as they vie for limited IMAX screens during their opening weekend. In a strategic move to mitigate this clash, Marvel Studios is reportedly considering advancing the release date of Avengers: Doomsday to December 11.

The Russo brothers’ film will reunite Robert Downey Jr. with Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Tom Hiddleston, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Sebastian Stan, promising a star-studded ensemble. Meanwhile, Dune 3 boasts a large cast including Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Rebecca Ferguson, Jason Momoa, Javier Bardem, and Anya Taylor-Joy.

Earlier this month, Chris Pratt addressed speculation about his involvement in Avengers: Doomsday. While many original cast members have been confirmed for the first Avengers team-up since 2019’s Endgame, details about Pratt’s participation remain uncertain. On Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Pratt was humorously questioned about the rumors. When asked if he would confirm Star-Lord’s appearance if the Pope inquired, Pratt laughed and said he would have to confirm it. However, when pressed to reveal a surprise appearance on the spot, he joked that Jimmy was not quite the Pope.
