Ryan Gosling Shares the Funny Improvised Origin of ‘Rocky hate Mark’ Line

Project Hail Mary has emerged as one of the standout films of 2026, with Ryan Gosling receiving acclaim for his portrayal of Ryland Grace. However, it is his on-screen relationship with Rocky, the alien companion, that has particularly struck a chord with viewers.

In a notable revelation, Gosling explained that the now-famous line “Rocky hate Mark” was not part of the original script but was instead improvised during filming. While shooting a scene that delved into Grace’s past relationship, Gosling spontaneously mentioned that his ex had moved on with someone named Mark. James Ortiz, playing Rocky, immediately responded in character, creating a spontaneous moment that was ultimately kept in the final version of the film.

This exchange occurs during a quiet conversation between Grace and Rocky, where Grace reflects on his life back home. Rocky’s quick and humorous reply not only adds comedic relief but also reveals his deep loyalty, making the moment both funny and touching.

Interestingly, the name “Mark” was a subtle tribute to Gosling’s longtime collaborator, Mark Avery, who happened to be just off-camera during the shoot. This personal touch adds an extra layer of meaning to the improvised line.

Directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller fostered an environment that encouraged improvisation, which helped develop the authentic chemistry between Gosling and Ortiz. Project Hail Mary is currently showing in theaters, with audiences now appreciating the spontaneous line that has become one of the film’s most endearing highlights.
