Willie Walsh Named New CEO of IndiGo, India’s Largest Airline

India’s largest airline, IndiGo, announced on Tuesday that Willie Walsh, the former head of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), will assume the role of CEO. This appointment resolves the leadership uncertainty following the unexpected departure of the previous CEO, Pieter Elbers. Walsh, a seasoned aviation professional with over four decades of experience, is set to take charge by August 3, once his tenure at IATA concludes in July.

Widely recognized for his candid communication style and strong emphasis on financial discipline, Walsh is considered one of the most influential figures in global aviation. His career is distinguished by successfully restructuring legacy airlines and steering the industry through challenging periods.

Walsh began his aviation journey in 1979 as a cadet pilot with Irish carrier Aer Lingus. He advanced to captain before transitioning into management roles, eventually becoming Aer Lingus’s CEO in 2001. During his leadership, he implemented significant cost-cutting measures and restored the airline’s profitability after years of financial losses.

In 2005, Walsh was appointed CEO of British Airways, where he navigated the airline through the 2008-2009 global financial crisis, further establishing his reputation as a resilient and tough leader. A notable milestone in his career was overseeing the 2011 merger of British Airways and Iberia, forming the International Airlines Group (IAG). He served as IAG’s CEO until September 2020, helping to develop one of Europe’s largest airline groups.

In April 2021, Walsh took on the role of director general at IATA, having been involved with the organization for many years. He was a member of IATA’s Board of Governors from 2005 to 2018 and chaired the board from 2016 to 2017. During his tenure as IATA chief, Walsh advocated for the reopening of international travel post-pandemic, criticized high airport and air navigation fees, and supported the aviation industry’s commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Now, Walsh is preparing to return to airline management by joining IndiGo, India’s leading low-cost carrier, as its CEO. This move marks a significant transition from representing global airlines at IATA to directly leading one of the fastest-growing carriers in Asia.
