Venice Film ‘Primetime’ Examines Journalism and Entertainment Boundaries

The film “Primetime,” competing at the Venice Film Festival, delves into the complex intersection of journalism and entertainment. Drawing inspiration from NBC’s investigative series “To Catch a Predator,” the movie examines how real danger intertwines with staged scenarios on television.

Robert Pattinson stars in the film, which is based on the work of US presenter Chris Hansen, known for confronting suspected paedophiles through decoys, hidden cameras, and televised sting operations. Director Lance Oppenheim expressed fascination with the show’s blend of authentic peril and carefully orchestrated setups, where actors posed as children to trap predators on camera.

Oppenheim, making his narrative feature debut after a career in documentaries, described the program as “stranger than fiction,” highlighting the collision of genuine threats with constructed television drama. The film also portrays Hansen’s rise within NBC, driven by ego, alongside the unraveling of his personal life as he becomes the target of tabloid scrutiny.

Hansen, who has only viewed the film’s trailer, publicly dismissed the movie as “totally made up.” In response, Pattinson maintained a diplomatic stance, expressing hope that Hansen would appreciate the film. Although not intended as a direct biopic, Pattinson acknowledged Hansen’s influence on the project, noting the groundbreaking nature of the original show and its rule-breaking approach to television.

Initially not planning to star, Pattinson became increasingly drawn to the lead role as research progressed. He described mastering Hansen’s accent and mannerisms as one of his most challenging acting experiences, crediting Oppenheim’s extensive collaboration in developing the character.

The film also marks the screen debut of Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Phoebe Bridgers, whom Pattinson praised for her relaxed presence and improvisational talent on set. “She was incredibly at ease, and I was very impressed,” he remarked.

“Primetime” is among four major films featuring Pattinson released this year, including the summer blockbuster “The Odyssey” and the upcoming “Dune: Part Three.” While juggling multiple projects proved invigorating, Pattinson joked about occasionally hearing traces of Hansen’s distinctive voice during other shoots, noting that filming for “The Odyssey” began just hours after finishing “Primetime.”

Competing for the prestigious Golden Lion award, “Primetime” is one of 21 films vying for the top prize at Venice, with the winner to be announced on September 12.
