At least 21 individuals lost their lives and several others sustained injuries when a bus crashed on a major highway in Egypt’s South Sinai governorate on Wednesday. The incident occurred on the Dahab-Nuweibaa road, just before the Al-Saada area heading towards Nuweibaa, a route that runs along the Red Sea coast and is popular among tourists.
Initially, the Egyptian Health Ministry reported a lower death toll but later confirmed the fatalities had risen to at least 21. Notably, Jordan’s Foreign Ministry confirmed that some passengers on the bus were Jordanian nationals, with initial reports indicating that some had been killed or injured. The exact nationalities of all victims have not yet been disclosed by Egyptian officials.
Emergency response teams acted promptly, dispatching around 20 ambulances to the crash site. Medical personnel worked at full capacity to treat the wounded and manage the crisis. Health Minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar instructed authorities to ensure the injured received the highest standard of care, maintain sufficient medical supplies, and coordinate closely with South Sinai officials.
The Health Ministry emphasized continuous monitoring of the situation and confirmed that all available medical teams were mobilized to respond swiftly. Condolences were extended to the families of the deceased, alongside wishes for the speedy recovery of those injured.
Jordan’s Foreign Ministry remains closely involved, seeking further details about the condition and identities of the Jordanian victims. The crash took place in a heavily trafficked area commonly used by tourists traveling between Red Sea destinations such as Dahab and Nuweibaa.
Authorities have yet to reveal the cause of the accident, with investigations expected to commence soon to determine the circumstances leading to the crash.
In a significant development, this tragedy follows another fatal road accident in Egypt last month, where 15 people died and 32 were injured in Ismailia governorate. Road safety remains a persistent issue in Egypt, with frequent bus and vehicle crashes resulting in substantial casualties.
As emergency operations continue, officials are assessing the victims and providing ongoing medical assistance to those affected by Wednesday’s South Sinai crash.
