Amnesty Report Details India’s Use of Pellets and Grenades on Gen Z Protests

An Amnesty International inquiry has uncovered that Indian security forces employed a range of aggressive crowd control measures during recent protests led by Generation Z students. The report highlights the use of tear gas, pellet guns, and electric shock devices as part of the crackdown on demonstrators. These findings shed light on the intensity of the state’s response to youth-led movements demanding social and political reforms.

Notably, the deployment of pellet guns has been a contentious issue in India, with previous incidents causing severe injuries and raising human rights concerns. The use of electric shock devices adds a new dimension to the tactics employed, indicating an escalation in the methods used to suppress dissent. This investigation underscores the challenges faced by young protesters in exercising their right to peaceful assembly.

In a significant development, the Amnesty report calls for accountability and urges Indian authorities to reconsider their approach to managing protests. The findings contribute to ongoing debates about civil liberties and the balance between security and human rights in democratic societies. Meanwhile, the international community continues to monitor the situation closely, emphasizing the importance of protecting freedom of expression and assembly.
