ESPN Founder Bill Rasmussen Passes Away at 93 After Parkinson’s Battle

Bill Rasmussen, the visionary behind the creation of ESPN, the pioneering 24-hour cable sports network launched in 1979, passed away at the age of 93 on Tuesday. He had been living with Parkinson’s disease, which he publicly disclosed in 2019, having been diagnosed five years earlier.

Rasmussen died peacefully at his home in Florida. He was predeceased by his wife of 56 years, Lois, who passed away in 2011. He is survived by his two sons.

In a groundbreaking move that transformed sports broadcasting, Rasmussen and his son Scott conceived the idea of a dedicated sports channel that would broadcast around the clock. This innovation fundamentally changed how Americans consumed sports content. Despite their foundational role, both were compelled to leave ESPN within a year due to decisions made by the network’s majority owner, Getty Oil.

In a notable tribute, ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro described Rasmussen as a remarkable visionary and innovator whose passion and entrepreneurial drive laid the groundwork for ESPN’s enduring success. Pitaro emphasized that the company’s culture today still reflects the qualities Rasmussen instilled during its inception in the late 1970s.
