Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United States, Rizwan Saeed Sheikh, stated that relations between Pakistan and the US have improved significantly compared to the past. However, he emphasized that this progress should not lead to complacency. Instead, he called for efforts to transform the current positive atmosphere into a durable, results-driven partnership.
The Pakistani American Press Association (PAPA) organized a joint ceremony in Washington to celebrate the 250th Independence Day of the United States alongside Pakistan’s upcoming 79th Independence Day. The event brought together diplomats, government and political representatives, journalists, Pakistani American intellectuals, business leaders, community figures, and members of the Pakistani American community.
Ambassador Sheikh, the chief guest, addressed the Pakistani American journalist community in detail. He acknowledged that while Pakistan-US relations appear much better now, there remains a critical need to build on this progress. He described the current moment as a valuable opportunity for both countries to evolve their relationship from one that simply “looks better” to a strong, lasting, and mutually beneficial partnership.
He reflected on the historical ups and downs of the bilateral relationship, noting that despite its fluctuations, the ties have endured through both the best and worst phases. Ambassador Sheikh highlighted Pakistan’s capacity not only to maintain its own stability but also to contribute to regional and global stability.
Referring to the recent joint defense agreement signed in Makkah between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Turkiye, he described it as recognition of Pakistan’s strategic geography and regional significance. This agreement underscores Pakistan’s important role in the wider geopolitical landscape.
Ambassador Sheikh pointed out that the current phase of Pakistan-US relations is particularly focused on enhancing economic cooperation. He stressed that the future of the partnership should be grounded in economic ties, trade, investment, and mutual engagement. Such a foundation, he suggested, could ensure the relationship’s longevity beyond his tenure and benefit future generations.
Concluding his remarks, the ambassador expressed hope that Pakistan-US relations would be strengthened in a way that transcends any single ambassador, government, or generation, aiming for a lasting and resilient partnership.
A notable segment of the evening was dedicated to honoring individuals who have made distinguished contributions in various fields including journalism, public service, law, business, social welfare, arts and literature, security, and the promotion of Pakistan-US relations. Leadership and Lifetime Achievement Awards were presented to Judge Amina Khan, Police Chief Kamran Afzal, Dr. Sajid Tarar, senior journalist Anwar Iqbal, Azeem M. Mian, Naveed Butt, Dr. Bina Goindi, Abdul Rauf Shakoori, Mian Tahir Ismail, Muhammad Saleem, and Ambassador Rizwan Saeed Sheikh himself.
Additionally, Pakistani American figures such as Dr. Sajid Tarar and American Muslim civil rights leader Zainab Chaudhry addressed the gathering. Journalism Excellence Awards were also distributed to Faqir Naqvi, Raja Zahid Khanzada, Aziz Ahmed, Uzma Gul, Zeeshan Tahir, Umar Farooq Jan, Asadullah Khalid, Fazal Khaliq, Muhammad Farrukh, Faheem Mian, Moaz Asad Siddiqui, Qazi Naveed, Madiha Masood, and Saqib-ul-Islam.
