NEPRA Approves Rs0.75 Per Unit Electricity Price Hike for August Bills

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has authorized a rise of Rs0.75 per unit in electricity tariffs as part of the monthly fuel cost adjustment (FCA) for June. This decision was formalized in a notification released on Friday.

The tariff increase will affect electricity consumers nationwide, including those served by K-Electric, and will be reflected in the August electricity bills. Notably, this approved hike is less than the Rs1.20 per unit increase initially requested by the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA), which had based its petition on fuel cost fluctuations during June.

NEPRA had postponed its ruling after holding a public hearing on the CPPA’s application. After thorough examination and verification of the data submitted, the regulator settled on the Rs0.75 per unit adjustment and issued the official notification accordingly.

Meanwhile, certain categories of consumers will be exempt from this increase. Lifeline consumers, prepaid electricity users, and electric vehicle (EV) charging stations will not be subject to the fuel cost adjustment.

The monthly fuel cost adjustment mechanism enables electricity tariffs to be modified in response to changes in global fuel prices and variations in the power generation mix, ensuring tariffs reflect current market conditions.
