FIFA President Faces Backlash After $4.2bn World Cup Rights Deal Collapses

FIFA President Gianni Infantino is under increasing scrutiny following the collapse of a controversial $4.2 billion proposal to sell a stake in the commercial rights of the FIFA World Cup. UEFA and CONCACAF have publicly expressed their loss of confidence in his leadership, highlighting growing concerns within global football about his governance style.

The plan, which involved creating a new commercial entity to manage FIFA competitions including the World Cup, faced fierce opposition from regional confederations. Many officials criticized the lack of consultation and transparency, describing the initiative as a secretive move that bypassed established governance processes.

UEFA, representing 55 member associations, unanimously rejected the proposal and hailed FIFA’s withdrawal as a “victory for the whole game.” However, they emphasized that rebuilding trust in FIFA is only beginning. UEFA stated that Infantino has lost the confidence not only of their organization but also of numerous other football stakeholders worldwide.

In a strong statement, UEFA thanked fans, leagues, clubs, players, associations, and political leaders who opposed the scheme, asserting that football is not for sale. They condemned the rushed, opaque nature of the deal and called for accountability from those responsible.

Similarly, CONCACAF criticized the proposal for being advanced without transparency, consultation, or due process. The confederation described the move as symptomatic of leadership that no longer prioritizes football and called for a thorough reassessment of Infantino’s presidency, citing a pattern of governance failures.

The backlash has raised serious questions about Infantino’s political standing as he prepares to seek a fourth term as FIFA president. UEFA reminded him of his 2016 campaign promises to run FIFA transparently and manage funds responsibly, noting that he has failed to meet these commitments. They also announced plans to work with global partners to develop a new resource distribution model through the existing FIFA Forward programme.

While FIFA and Infantino have not responded to UEFA’s criticisms, other football bodies have voiced similar concerns. The Dutch Football Association cited a fundamental breach of trust, and German football president Bernd Neuendorf accused Infantino of unilateral actions lacking transparency. Norwegian Football Federation President Lise Klaveness warned that international football cooperation was jeopardized by pursuit of individual interests.

In contrast, Qatar expressed support for Infantino, affirming the merit of the proposal and backing his leadership. The president of the Moroccan Football Federation, Fouzi Lekjaa, also welcomed the withdrawal of the plan but reiterated his support for Infantino.

The controversy erupted shortly after Infantino announced the plan, which quickly met resistance from regional confederations who felt excluded from the decision-making process. Following the backlash, Infantino confirmed that FIFA had abandoned the proposal after considering the widespread concerns.

Asian Football Confederation President Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al-Khalifa praised FIFA’s reversal and stressed the importance of timely, transparent consultation with all stakeholders for initiatives affecting global football. Football Australia Chairman Anter Isaac echoed this sentiment, supporting innovation but warning against compromising principles such as integrity, governance, and due process.

This episode comes at a critical juncture for Infantino, who declared in April his intention to run for a fourth term. Since succeeding Sepp Blatter in 2016, he has been re-elected twice without opposition and appeared firmly in control. However, experts suggest the recent fallout reveals dissatisfaction among FIFA members that could complicate his re-election prospects at the FIFA Congress in Morocco next March.

Sports marketing analyst Bob Dorfman described Infantino as egotistical and noted that his decisions have alienated many member associations. Economist Victor Matheson highlighted the dramatic shift in Infantino’s fortunes, pointing out that just weeks after celebrating the most commercially successful World Cup ever, he now faces significant challenges to his leadership.
