Defence Minister Khawaja Asif stated that there are no signs indicating the current government is approaching its conclusion. He described the existing “hybrid system” as a crucial opportunity to rectify past errors. Speaking on a news program on Friday, Asif emphasized that the present system is intended to address and correct previous mistakes.
He further explained that the hybrid system is the only viable approach to resolving Pakistan’s challenges. Asif, it requires the collaboration of several prominent figures, including President Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Field Marshal Asim Munir, and a few other influential leaders, to collectively decide the country’s future course.
These remarks came in response to Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi’s recent comments, in which he declared that the current governance framework has “collapsed” and is incapable of tackling the nation’s problems. Naqvi called for comprehensive administrative reforms, including the establishment of new administrative units or provinces. Addressing the Pakistan Economic Summit in Islamabad on July 30, he warned that without fundamental changes, Pakistan would continue to face the same issues for the next decade.
In a significant development, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Director General Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry highlighted the critical role of good governance for Pakistan’s security during a press conference on Friday. He stressed that unresolved problems indicate the urgent need for improvements in governance, which is essential to overcoming the country’s challenges.
Meanwhile, Defence Minister Asif pointed out a distinction between the statements made by Interior Minister Naqvi and the ISPR DG. He suggested that Naqvi’s remarks carried a political dimension and expressed full agreement with the military spokesperson’s view that these comments represented Naqvi’s personal opinion. Asif noted that Naqvi has been part of the current system for over three years and reiterated that the military spokesperson had also characterized Naqvi’s statements as individual perspectives.
