2.9-Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Karachi, No Casualties Reported

A mild earthquake measuring 2.9 on the Richter scale was felt across various neighborhoods of Karachi on Friday evening. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) confirmed that the tremor occurred at 6:01pm, with the epicenter located within the boundaries of the port city itself. The seismic event originated at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers, which contributed to the noticeable shaking experienced by residents.

Despite the tremors, there have been no immediate reports of injuries or structural damage in the affected areas. This incident adds to the list of seismic activities that Pakistan regularly experiences due to its geographical positioning. The country lies along the boundary where the Indian tectonic plate collides with the Eurasian plate, making it prone to frequent earthquakes.

South Asia, including Pakistan, remains a seismically active region because of the ongoing northward push of the Indian plate into the Eurasian plate. This tectonic interaction has historically resulted in several devastating earthquakes across Pakistan. For instance, earlier this year in February, a 5.8-magnitude quake shook Islamabad, Swat, and Hunza, causing widespread concern. More tragically, the 2005 earthquake in Azad Kashmir resulted in over 73,000 fatalities and left millions displaced.

In addition, the southwestern province of Balochistan faced severe consequences from a 2021 earthquake in Harnai, which claimed at least 20 lives and complicated rescue operations due to landslides triggered by the quake. Experts emphasize that Pakistan’s rugged and mountainous terrain in these earthquake-prone zones poses significant challenges for emergency response and highlights the importance of preparedness and resilient infrastructure to mitigate future disasters.
