Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem and India’s Neeraj Chopra are set to renew their javelin rivalry in the Commonwealth Games final scheduled for Friday at Scotstoun Stadium, Edinburgh. However, Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Pathirage has emerged as a formidable contender following an impressive qualifying round.
The men’s javelin final will take place at 12:15 PST (8:15pm local time). Ahead of the event, Nadeem urged his supporters to pray for his success.
Pathirage led Thursday’s qualifiers with a top throw of 82.84 metres, ahead of Grenada’s Anderson Peters who threw 81.29 metres, and South Africa’s Douw Smit with 80.84 metres. Notably, none of the 12 finalists reached the automatic qualifying distance of 84 metres, as cold and windy weather conditions hindered optimal performances.
Chopra secured fifth place in qualifying with a throw of 79.61 metres, while defending Commonwealth champion Nadeem finished seventh at 78.63 metres. The final promises to be highly competitive, featuring several major international medalists, including five of the top seven finishers from the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Nadeem enters the final as both the reigning Commonwealth and Olympic champion. He holds the Commonwealth Games record with a 90.18-metre throw set in 2022 and stunned the world with a 92.97-metre Olympic record throw in Paris, which earned Pakistan its first individual Olympic gold medal.
Meanwhile, Chopra remains one of the sport’s most decorated athletes. The Indian star has dominated their head-to-head encounters, winning nine of their ten meetings. His accolades include Olympic gold at Tokyo 2020, world championship gold in 2023, Asian Games titles, and multiple Diamond League victories.
In a significant development, Pathirage’s rise has highlighted Sri Lanka’s growing prominence in javelin. The 23-year-old has enjoyed a breakthrough season, including a massive 92.62-metre throw at the Rome Diamond League in May—one of the world’s best throws this year and potentially enough to surpass Nadeem’s Commonwealth Games record if replicated in the final.
Pathirage also claimed victories at the Kip Keino Classic (89.28 metres), Doha Diamond League (88.68 metres), and Ostrava Golden Spike (86.57 metres), and finished second at the Rabat Diamond League. His consistent performances have made him the favorite heading into the medal round.
Chopra acknowledged the challenging conditions during qualifying, citing cold temperatures and crosswinds, but emphasized his primary goal was to advance to the final. He also praised Pathirage’s form, noting the Sri Lankan athlete’s role in enhancing South Asia’s reputation in the sport.
Pathirage expressed satisfaction with qualifying on his first attempt and stated his ambition to achieve a personal best and secure gold in the final. Nadeem commented on the difficult weather compared to conditions in Pakistan but remained optimistic about earning another podium finish. He reaffirmed his determination to make his country proud and contend for another gold medal.
