In a tragic incident in Quetta’s Sorange area, the bodies of nine labourers were recovered following the collapse of a coalmine, confirmed by the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) on Thursday. The mine owner, Qurban Jogezai, attributed the collapse to a methane gas explosion. At the time of the accident, 42 labourers were working inside the mine, all of whom were from Shangla district.
Meanwhile, in a separate accident earlier the same day, a labourer lost his life in a coalmine mishap in Balochistan’s Harnai district. The worker was performing his duties inside the mine when a large boulder suddenly fell on him, inflicting fatal injuries. The miner died instantly. Rescue teams promptly arrived at the scene and transferred the body to a nearby hospital for legal procedures.
Coalmine accidents remain a frequent occurrence in Balochistan and Sindh, often linked to insufficient safety protocols and hazardous mining conditions. Earlier this month, a wall collapse at Ibrahim Coal Mines near Meting railway station in Thatta district resulted in the deaths of four labourers and serious injuries to five others. The victims included 40-year-old Ziaullah, 51-year-old Noor Mohammad, and 20-year-old Irfanullah, all from Swat, along with 41-year-old Saindad from Sanghar district.
